FG Approves New 10,000 Barrels Refinery in Delta State
The Federal Government has approved the construction of a new 10,000 barrels per stream day (BPSD) refinery in Imode, Ughelli, Delta State. This license was granted to MRO Energy Limited by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
Announcing the development on its official X handle, NMDPRA stated, “The Authority Chief Executive, Engr. Farouk Ahmed, presented a Licence To Establish a 10,000 Barrels Per Stream Day Refinery at Imode in Ughelli, Delta State, to MRO Energy Limited.”
This milestone follows the recent approval of a 27,000 BPSD refinery for Process Design and Development Limited in Gombe State, reflecting the government’s push to boost Nigeria’s refining capacity.
Currently, Nigeria has about 11 modular and regular refineries. However, despite the growing number, many remain underutilized or non-operational. Earlier this month, the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria announced plans to establish a new 50,000 BPSD refinery in collaboration with its partners, signaling a renewed focus on improving local refining capabilities.
The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission has set a target of refining 770,500 barrels of oil per day domestically, underscoring the need for efficient operations across the nation’s refineries.
While the approval of new refineries is a step forward, ensuring they function optimally will be key to addressing Nigeria’s energy needs and reducing reliance on imported petroleum products.
