Ex Nigerian goalkeeper Peter Rufai laid to rest in Lagos as Taribo West blasts authorities

Friends, family, and football lovers gathered in Lagos on Friday, August 22, to bid farewell to former Nigerian goalkeeper Peter Rufai, popularly known as Dodo Mayana. His burial took place at Ikoyi Cemetery, where emotions ran high as many could not hold back their tears.

Rufai, who was widely celebrated as one of Nigeria’s greatest goalkeepers, had been ill for some weeks before passing away at a hospital in Lagos. His death left a big gap in Nigerian football, and tributes poured in from across the country. The Super Eagles described him on social media as a legend who will remain “forever in our hearts.”

At the funeral, former Super Eagles defender Taribo West did not hide his anger and disappointment. He openly criticised the Nigerian government and football authorities for failing to provide proper support to Rufai and his family during his illness and even after his death. According to him, it was shameful that the family had to solicit funds for the burial of such a national hero.

Taribo West went further to say that he would never encourage his own son to play for Nigeria because of the way the country treats its football legends. He recalled how he did not cry when he lost his parents but admitted that Rufai’s death gave him goose pimples, showing how deeply he was affected.

He also mentioned other late Nigerian football stars like Stephen Keshi, Rashidi Yekini, Thompson Oliha, and Shofoluwe, stressing that they all faced similar neglect. For him, this reflects a deeper problem in how the nation values its sports icons.

Taribo questioned whether Nigeria truly has a functioning football federation or association in Lagos State, considering the poor treatment Rufai’s family received. He called the situation “madness,” pointing out that the family had to beg for money within their circle just to give the goalkeeper a proper farewell.

The burial of Peter Rufai has not only marked the passing of a great goalkeeper but also raised important questions about how Nigeria treats its heroes. For many, it is a reminder that more needs to be done to honour and care for those who brought pride to the nation.
