Eriga Says Yahoo Boys Have Destroyed True Romance in Nigeria

Nigerian rapper Erigga has expressed concern over the fading culture of genuine love and romance in the country, blaming internet fraudsters popularly known as Yahoo boys for changing relationship dynamics in Nigeria.

Speaking in an interview with Yanga FM Lagos, Erigga explained that the extravagant lifestyle of Yahoo boys has set unrealistic standards for love and relationships. According to him, the excessive spending by these young men has made many women develop high expectations, making it difficult for ordinary men to sustain healthy relationships.

“Yahoo boys don kill romance. [Genuine] romance no longer exists,” Erigga said. “When last did you see two lovers holding hands together in the street? It’s been a long time. The problem is that we are raising weak men who think their value is only in their pockets.”

The rapper lamented that what used to be simple gestures of affection have now turned into financial competitions. “In the past, it used to be meat pie and Mr Biggs Fanta — very affordable back then. And the women were very appreciative. But men also share in the blame. Weak men set the standards, and women took and raised the bars,” he added.

Erigga further noted that the focus on money and luxury has weakened the emotional bond in relationships. He said many women now view relationships as a means of survival, while men feel pressured to show off wealth they do not have just to win love.

The rapper’s statement has sparked conversations among Nigerians on social media, with many agreeing that materialism has indeed overshadowed genuine affection and connection in modern relationships.

Erigga’s message serves as a wake-up call for young Nigerians to value authenticity, respect, and emotional connection over material gain in their romantic lives.
