DSS summons Awujale nominees as kingmakers cancel ‘meet-and-greet’
The Awujale Kingmakers Council has cancelled a previously scheduled meet-and-greet with Awujale nominees and has instead directed all nominees to report to the Department of State Services (DSS) office in Ijebu-Ode.
The decision was conveyed in an official letter dated January 20, 2026, addressed to key leaders of the Fusengbuwa ruling house, including the chairman, Otunba Lateef Owoyemi, his deputy, Otunba Dokun Ajidagba, and the vice chairman, Prof. Fassy Yusuf.
According to the notice, all Awujale nominees are required to present themselves at the DSS office located along NTA Road, beside the State Psychiatric Hospital, off Igbeba Road, Ijebu-Ode, by 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday. The council stressed that punctuality is mandatory.
The letter explained that the directive from the DSS made it necessary to cancel the planned engagement earlier scheduled to take place at the Aafin Awujale. The council expressed regret over the sudden change and apologised for any inconvenience it might cause the nominees.
The communication, signed by the Secretary of the Awujale Afobaje Council, Chief Ayotunde Ola Odulaja, urged all concerned parties to strictly comply with the instruction and ensure that no nominee is absent.
The development comes amid ongoing traditional processes and heightened scrutiny surrounding the selection of a new Awujale in Ijebuland. The selection process has previously faced delays due to petitions and interventions by authorities.
While the purpose of the DSS engagement was not disclosed in the letter, the move has drawn attention given the sensitive nature of traditional leadership succession in the state.
As of the time of filing this report, no official statement had been issued on the expected outcome of the DSS meeting or its implications for the Awujale selection process. Residents and stakeholders are closely monitoring developments as the process continues.
