DHQ Confirms Coup Plot, Indicted Officers to Face Military Trial

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has officially confirmed that some Nigerian military officers are facing allegations of plotting to overthrow the government, following a thorough investigation into misconduct within the ranks.

The issue first came to light in October 2025, when 16 officers, ranging from the rank of Captain to Brigadier General, were arrested by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) over alleged breaches of service regulations and acts of indiscipline. Reports at the time suggested the officers were holding secret meetings aimed at toppling the government, with some sources linking the alleged plot to the cancellation of the October 1 Independence Day parade.

At the time, the then Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, stated that the arrests were part of internal disciplinary measures and dismissed media reports as an attempt to create tension among Nigerians. He explained that the ongoing investigation was routine, designed to uphold discipline and professionalism within the Armed Forces.

On Monday, Major General Samaila Uba, the current Director of Defence Information, provided an update, confirming that the investigation had been concluded in accordance with military procedures. Uba revealed that some of the officers had indeed been found with cases to answer regarding the alleged coup plot, and the report has been forwarded to the appropriate superior authority for further action.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria wishes to inform the public that the investigation into the conduct of the affected personnel has been completed. Findings indicate that a number of officers were involved in actions inconsistent with the ethics, values, and professional standards required of members of the AFN,” the statement said.

Those indicted will now be formally arraigned before military judicial panels and tried under the Armed Forces Act and other relevant service regulations. Uba emphasised that the process will follow principles of accountability, fairness, and due process.

He added that the measures taken are strictly disciplinary, aimed at preserving order, discipline, and operational effectiveness within the armed forces. “The AFN remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty, and respect for constitutional authority,” Uba said.
