Delta Governor Oborevwori, Okowa, and Entire PDP Structure Join APC in Major Political Shift
In a groundbreaking development in Delta State politics, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and all key members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state have officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This major switch was confirmed on Wednesday following a six-hour closed-door meeting at Government House in Asaba.
The announcement was made by Senator James Manager, who revealed that the move included not just the sitting and former governors, but also the Speaker of the House, the PDP state chairman, all local government chairmen, and other top leaders of the party. According to Manager, the decision was necessary because “we cannot continue to be in a sinking boat.”
Delta State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Aniagwu Charles, also confirmed the defection. He explained that the decision was made to ensure continued development, peace, and progress in the state. Comparing the situation in the PDP to palm wine that has lost its taste, Charles said it was time for the leaders to “change the drinking party.”
He emphasized that the collective choice was driven by the need to collaborate more effectively and secure the future of Delta State. “We concluded that leaving the PDP was necessary to build a state every Deltan will be proud of,” Charles said.
He further hinted that a formal public declaration would be made the following Monday, confirming the mass movement into the APC.
This shift represents a major political recalibration in the South-South region of Nigeria, with Delta State, previously a stronghold of the PDP, now leaning heavily toward the APC. The move could significantly impact future elections and power dynamics both within the state and nationally.
