Dele Farotimi Says Peter Obi Still His Top Choice for 2027

Human rights lawyer and political activist, Dele Farotimi, has confirmed that he still supports Peter Obi as his top choice for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election. He made this clear during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics. According to him, unless a better candidate appears, his vote will again go to Obi.

Farotimi explained that if free and fair elections were held today, he would gladly vote for Peter Obi. He praised Obi for his integrity and ability to lead, saying those qualities still make him the most trustworthy option available. However, he also shared that he hopes Obi will be more direct and open about his policies next time.

“If elections where our votes will count were held today, I would vote for Peter Gregory Obi, unless somebody else enters the race who I believe can do better,” Farotimi stated. He made it clear that he is not blindly loyal but strongly believes Obi has what it takes to move Nigeria forward.

Farotimi also said it would take something very serious for him to stop supporting Obi. He gave an example, saying that if Obi joined forces with people he considers to have bad values or questionable characters, that might make him rethink his support. But for now, no other candidate compares, he said.

“Something drastic would have to happen for me to decide not to support Peter Obi,” Farotimi explained. “It might be that he aligns with some objectionable individuals I cannot tolerate. But outside of that, there’s no one else.”

Despite his strong support for Obi, Farotimi criticised the early conversations around the 2027 elections. He said focusing too early on elections takes attention away from the serious problems Nigeria is currently facing. He believes the country is not in the right state to talk about elections.

“I actually think our conversations about elections at this point are a disservice to ourselves,” he said. “We really cannot speak of elections in our current circumstances.”

Still, Farotimi said he remains hopeful for a better Nigeria. He believes real change is still possible and that Peter Obi remains the best person to lead the country in that direction—if given the chance.
