Davido’s Visit to Tinubu Sparks Mixed Reactions Over Political Alignment

Afrobeats superstar Davido has stirred fresh controversy after visiting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja over the weekend. The visit, which also included Cubana Chief Priest and Ubi Franklin, has led to mixed reactions online—particularly in light of Davido’s recent public criticism of Nigeria’s economic condition.

The 32-year-old music icon was warmly received at Aso Rock, where he and his entourage exchanged pleasantries with the President. In a video that quickly went viral, Davido introduced his companions, stating, “They are both your members, sir. They are APC.” This comment was met with laughter as the meeting took on a light-hearted tone.

During the visit, Ubi Franklin reminded the President of his campaign support, revealing that he travelled to 15 states alongside Tinubu during the 2023 elections. Tinubu responded approvingly, “Very good. We succeeded and made it to the presidency.”

Cubana Chief Priest went a step further, confidently proclaiming, “We will succeed again in 2027,” which drew laughter from those present.

Earlier in the week, the group also visited Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and Vice President Kashim Shettima. These political visits appear to signal Davido’s closer alignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)—a move many online find contradictory.

The backlash stems from Davido’s recent interview in the U.S., where he discouraged African-Americans from visiting Nigeria, citing economic hardship. “It is not cool back home. The economy now is in shambles, the exchange rate is messed up, and the price of petroleum is too high,” he said.

Now, many Nigerians are questioning why Davido, who previously voiced concerns about the country’s governance, is seen in a friendly meeting with the President. Social media users have labeled it a clear case of double standards, with some accusing the artist of playing both sides for personal gain.

This controversy highlights the ongoing tension between celebrity influence and political engagement in Nigeria. While some fans support Davido’s right to engage with political leaders, others argue that artists should stand firm on their principles—especially when they speak on national issues.
