Davido Says Many Nigerian Artists Are Afraid to Be Themselves Online
Afrobeats superstar Davido has opened up about why he believes he is the most-followed African artist on social media, saying his openness and natural attitude have made him more relatable to fans.
In a recent BET Talks interview, the music star, whose real name is David Adeleke, said his willingness to connect freely with his followers helped him stand out from other artists who are often afraid to show their real lives.
“I’m the most-followed African artist across social media because I’m free with my fans,” he said. “In the early days of my career, I used to do vlogs, sharing my everyday life. But many Nigerian and African artists are scared to show their real selves.”
Davido added that his time living in America played a role in shaping his more relaxed and open mindset. He said some artists try too hard to appear perfect, while he chooses to keep things real.
“Some people want to always look a certain way for the camera. But I take pictures in shorts and slippers, just chilling at home. I still see myself as a regular person,” he explained. “When it’s time to have fun, I turn up. But when I’m home, I keep it simple.”
According to him, many celebrities overthink their public image. But when he moved back to Nigeria, he chose to just be himself and “go with the flow.”
Davido’s message is a reminder that fans appreciate authenticity. By staying true to himself, he has built a massive online following and become one of Africa’s most loved artists.
