Davido Says He Faces Hate Because His Father Is Rich

Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has opened up about the criticism he constantly faces in the Nigerian music industry. According to him, much of the backlash is not due to his music but because of his wealthy background.

During a recent chat on the Culture Knock Out podcast, Davido said that being the son of a rich man made many people turn against him. He said, “I’m the most criticised artist in Nigeria. I’ve been on fire, but the hate started when people found out my father was rich.”

At the start of his music journey, Davido explained that very few people knew about his family’s wealth. By the time the truth came out, he had already released several hit songs. “It was too late. I had three hit records before they knew I came from money,” he said.

Despite the stigma of being a “rich kid,” Davido shared that he was deeply passionate about music and was ready to give up everything to pursue his dream. “I didn’t care if I had to be homeless. I just wanted to do music,” he revealed.

He added that the hate only grew as his popularity increased. “People started hating me because my dad is rich. But I keep dropping good music, and it keeps working,” he said confidently.

Davido also noted that criticism is common when someone becomes successful. He compared it to politics, saying, “When you’re running for election, people love and vote for you. But when you become president, they hate you.”

This isn’t the first time Davido has spoken about dealing with public scrutiny. But once again, the singer made it clear that his focus remains on making good music and proving his worth—regardless of his background.
