Davido Clears the Air on Friendship with Hushpuppi in Viral Interview

Nigerian music superstar Davido recently opened up about his relationship with convicted fraudster Hushpuppi, revealing new details during an interview that has since gone viral and caused a stir on social media.

While speaking on the Bagfuel podcast, Davido, also known as OBO and leader of the 30BG crew, stated that although Hushpuppi is his friend, he never truly knew what the controversial figure was involved in before his arrest. Hushpuppi, real name Ramon Abbas, was arrested in Dubai in 2020 and sentenced in the United States for cyber-related crimes.

Did Davido know what Hushpuppi was doing?
In the interview, Davido made it clear that despite their friendship, he had no idea about Hushpuppi’s criminal activities. He said:

“My prayers go out to him, he’s my friend. I just used to see him around and I never really knew what he was doing but he lived a good life.”

The singer further revealed that he has stayed in contact with Hushpuppi and even hinted at a possible release date. According to Davido:

“I’ve been talking to him too, he’s coming out soon. He lived life.”

Despite acknowledging their bond, Davido did not shy away from expressing his views about Hushpuppi’s choices. He added that enjoying a lavish lifestyle for a few years is not worth losing one’s freedom.

“Some people are happy to ball for five years and that’s it. In Nigeria we say, ‘e get suffer wey you go suffer’, that is you go through some hardships that you’re like ‘let me ball for two years and I’m good’.”

Mixed reactions trail Davido’s comments
Davido’s statements sparked reactions from fans and critics alike. Some praised him for being honest about his friendship with Hushpuppi, while others questioned his association with the convicted fraudster.

  • Phranklin26: “They all unfollowed him when he got arrested. When he comes out now, they will want to ball with him again.”

Some also referenced past controversies, including when Davido promoted a meme coin in 2024, which led to warnings from Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This only added fuel to the ongoing debates about celebrity endorsements and accountability.
