David Beckham and Gary Oldman Receive Knighthoods in King Charles’ Birthday Honours
David Beckham and Gary Oldman have officially been knighted by King Charles as part of this year’s special birthday honours list. The announcement, made on Saturday, also celebrated several other notable figures from the arts and public service sectors.
David Beckham, aged 50, began his football journey in 1993 with Manchester United. Over the years, he became one of the most admired players, making nearly 400 appearances for the club and helping them win several major trophies. His international career was equally impressive, with 115 appearances for England, 58 of them as captain. Beyond football, Beckham became a global celebrity, especially after marrying fashion icon and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham in 1999.
Gary Oldman, now 67, started out in theatre, performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company before breaking into Hollywood. He gained worldwide acclaim for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour (2017), earning him an Oscar for Best Actor. Oldman also starred in major franchises such as the Harry Potter series and The Dark Knight Trilogy. Most recently, he appeared in the hit TV spy series Slow Horses.
Other honourees in this year’s list include Elaine Paige, known for her contributions to musical theatre, and author Pat Barker. Both women received damehoods. Renowned ceramics maker Emma Bridgewater was also honoured. Music legend Roger Daltrey, frontman of The Who, was knighted for his extensive charitable work, particularly with the Teenage Cancer Trust.
In total, over 1,200 individuals were recognised, many of whom were honoured for their dedication to public service. The honours list highlights the wide range of talent and commitment across the UK.
King Charles will celebrate his official birthday with the traditional “Trooping the Colour” parade in London on Saturday. However, his real birthday falls on November 14.
