Comedian Klint Da Drunk Opens Up About His Journey from Music to Comedy
Klint Da Drunk, whose real name is Afamefuna Igwemba, is a Nigerian comedian widely known for his funny drunken persona and slurred speech. However, before he became a household name in comedy, his first passion was music.
During his undergraduate days at the Institute of Management Technology (IMT), Enugu, Klint was inspired by fellow student and music star Innocent ‘2Baba’ Idibia. Watching 2Baba’s performance made him reconsider his path in music. He realized his style was different and felt comedy could be his true calling.
Bobby McFerrin’s 1988 hit influenced Klint’s comedic style, ‘Don’t Worry Be Happy’, which became a theme in the now-retired Nite of a Thousand Laffs comedy show, known for selling out venues across Nigeria. He also explored music, featuring in the hip-hop track ‘Obodo’ by rapper Mr Raw, with whom he co-founded a music group.
He first performed his signature drunken comedy during student talent meetings, and the style quickly gained popularity. At first, Klint kept it private because he wasn’t confident about it, but seeing comedians like Nkem Owoh perform proudly on TV inspired him to continue.
Despite portraying a drunken character on stage, Klint does not consume alcohol due to a medical condition. In a 2018 interview, he explained that even a small amount of alcohol can give him severe headaches for days, and he avoids strong painkillers to protect his health.
Klint Da Drunk has also appeared in numerous Nollywood films, including ‘Knock Out’, ‘19 Willock Place’, ‘Price of Deceit’, ‘Brother Jekwu’, ‘Fast Cash’, ‘Ojuju’, and ‘Dry’, among others. His journey from aspiring musician to celebrated comedian showcases his talent, resilience, and ability to entertain audiences across Nigeria.
