Comedian Ali Baba Supports Polygamy, Says It Promotes Discipline in Marriage

Veteran Nigerian comedian Ali Baba has stirred reactions online after openly expressing his support for polygamy, claiming it encourages discipline and order in marriages.

In a recent interview, the celebrated entertainer argued that although many criticize polygamy today, it has long-standing cultural roots and can bring practical benefits to relationships. According to him, some men find that having more than one wife helps maintain balance and control within the home.

“Some people believe that if you have only one wife, you may not be able to control her, but if the wife knows you have more than one, she’ll calm down because she knows that if she misbehaves, another person will take her place,” Ali Baba said.

He also referred to traditional African societies, where polygamy was not only accepted but sometimes encouraged by women themselves. In certain cultures, wives even helped their husbands find additional wives to prevent extramarital affairs and avoid the shame such situations could bring.

Ali Baba went on to explain that in the past, when a man died, it was common for his brother to marry his widow to ensure her safety and the well-being of her children. He said these customs were guided by values of care and family stability, not exploitation.

Although he acknowledged that modern society’s values have shifted, the comedian insisted that polygamy remains a functional and culturally relevant marital system. “It may not be fashionable today, but I personally believe in it,” he concluded.

His comments quickly went viral, drawing a wave of mixed reactions from social media users. While some supported his views as a reflection of cultural reality, others criticized them as outdated and patriarchal.

One user wrote, “The idea that women behave better out of fear of another wife is outdated. True discipline in marriage comes from mutual respect, not intimidation!” Another questioned, “Can we men also allow women to do the same since it helps maintain marital discipline?”

Others dismissed the statement entirely, saying, “I’ve never seen a disciplined polygamous man. He’s always hunting for the next one,” while another added, “In 2025? Men who think like this, I pray they meet their match in women — aura for aura.”

Ali Baba’s remarks have reignited public debate about the relevance of traditional marital systems in modern Nigerian society.
