CAF Rejects Date Change as Nigeria vs Cameroon Friendly Set for Tuesday
The friendly match between Nigeria’s Super Falcons and Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses has once again been rescheduled, following the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) rejection of a proposed date change. The match will now take place on Tuesday, June 3, at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta, according to an official statement from the Super Falcons.
Originally set for Tuesday, the match had been briefly shifted to Monday, June 2, after the cancellation of the first leg. However, the revised date was not approved by CAF, leading to a reversion to the initial plan. The initial change was made to accommodate the cancellation of Saturday’s first leg in Ikenne, which was called off due to the Cameroonian team’s late arrival.
The Indomitable Lionesses had reached Ikenne late Friday night, missing key pre-match requirements and recovery time, which forced the first match to be scrapped altogether. This led both the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) to propose Monday for the remaining fixture, a request CAF did not endorse.
As a result, the friendly will proceed on Tuesday in Abeokuta. The Cameroonian squad is currently camped in nearby Ijebu Ode, where they are preparing for the game with training sessions.
This upcoming match marks the Super Falcons’ return to international football since their 1–0 loss to France in a friendly back in November. It also serves as a key preparation match ahead of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
While Cameroon will not feature at the upcoming WAFCON, they remain a familiar opponent for Nigeria. The Super Falcons have dominated recent encounters, with the Lionesses failing to score in their last six meetings and not winning against Nigeria since 2012.
Fans are now eagerly anticipating this fixture, which continues one of Africa’s most historic women’s football rivalries and offers both teams valuable match practice.
