AY Makun Speaks Out After EFCC Invitation Over Spraying of Naira and Foreign Currencies

Popular Nigerian comedian and actor, Ayo ‘AY’ Makun, has confirmed that he was recently invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for questioning regarding the spraying of money at a public event.

Taking to his Instagram page, AY posted videos of the moment that triggered the EFCC’s attention. He also used the opportunity to call on Nigerians to show respect for both local and foreign currencies when giving money during celebrations.

In his statement, AY expressed gratitude for how the situation was handled. “I am grateful to God for His mercy and guidance. On Monday, I was invited by the EFCC over an incident involving the public spraying of both naira and dollars—an act considered an abuse of the Naira,” he wrote.

He went on to thank the EFCC for their understanding and for clearing him after confirming that the money involved had no link to any criminal or illegal activity.

“To the EFCC and all involved, thank you for the clarity and for confirming that the funds sprayed were not connected to any form of crime. I was granted a pardon based on this confirmation,” AY added.

Addressing his fans and fellow Nigerians, he acknowledged that money spraying is a common cultural practice at weddings, funerals, and other parties. However, he stressed that such acts may carry serious legal consequences under Nigerian law.

“It’s important we all understand that even though spraying money has become part of our celebration culture, it is still seen as a violation of the law,” he warned. “Mutilating or mishandling the Naira—by tearing, spraying, or defacing—is illegal and undermines the value of our national currency.”

The comedian also shared slides on his Instagram post, listing the dos and don’ts of handling money at public events, encouraging everyone to become more informed and act responsibly.

This development follows the EFCC’s recent crackdown on Naira abuse in public gatherings as part of a broader campaign, alongside the Central Bank of Nigeria, to uphold the dignity of the national currency.
