Ahmed Musa Retires from International Football After 15 Years with Super Eagles
Ahmed Musa, the former Super Eagles captain, has announced his retirement from international football, ending a remarkable 15-year career with the Nigerian national team. He shared the news on Instagram on December 17, 2025, reflecting on his long journey representing Nigeria.
Musa, who began answering Nigeria’s call at just 17 years old, became the most capped player in the history of the Super Eagles with 111 appearances. He described his time in the national team as a period of pride and service, saying, “I bin wear dis badge wit pride for 15 years. My heart go always beat green.”
During his tenure, Musa achieved several historic milestones. He captained the team, led by example, and became a key figure in Nigeria’s football history. Musa was part of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad and became Nigeria’s highest goalscorer in World Cup history, scoring five goals across tournaments. He also made history as the first Nigerian player to score twice in a FIFA World Cup match, netting two goals against Argentina in the 2014 World Cup.
Musa’s international career started in April 2010 when Coach Lars Lagerbäck called him to join the senior national team. He played his first match in September 2010 at age 17 and scored his first goal in a friendly against Kenya in March 2011. Over his career, he scored a total of 16 goals for Nigeria and played an essential role in both the under-20 and under-23 teams before solidifying his place in the senior squad.
Reflecting on his career, Musa said, “I know say I give my best. I don really live my dream.” His retirement marks the end of an era for Nigerian football, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, leadership, and historic achievements that will inspire future generations.
