AFCON 2025: FG Congratulates Super Eagles, Says Nigeria Remains Proud
The Federal Government has praised the Super Eagles for their performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), affirming that Nigerians remain proud of the team despite their semi-final exit. The commendation came in a statement released on Thursday by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.
The government applauded the players for representing Nigeria with dignity, resilience, and professionalism throughout the tournament. Idris highlighted that the team’s conduct, determination, and teamwork were as important as the results, saying, “Even in defeat, you showed character, teamwork and resilience, and those qualities matter deeply to the nation you represent.”
According to the minister, the Super Eagles reminded Nigerians that wearing the national green and white jersey represents courage, unity, and perseverance. “Football has its highs and lows, but your effort and commitment throughout this tournament have earned the respect and gratitude of Nigerians at home and abroad,” he added.
Idris encouraged the team to learn from the experience, remain united, and come back stronger for future competitions. “Hold your heads high, stay united and return stronger. Nigeria is grateful for the joy and hope you gave us during this competition, and the nation stands with you, always,” he said.
The Super Eagles were eliminated on Wednesday after losing 4–2 in a penalty shootout to host nation Morocco, following a goalless draw after extra time at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium. The semi-final was tightly contested, with Morocco dominating possession and registering 16 shots compared to Nigeria’s two. Both goalkeepers, Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali and Morocco’s Yassine Bounou, made crucial saves to keep the match level during regular and extra time.
Nigeria’s key forwards, Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, struggled to break down Morocco’s defensive structure. Ultimately, Morocco secured a place in the AFCON 2025 final through penalties, ending Nigeria’s campaign.
Despite the exit, the Federal Government stressed that the Super Eagles’ performance had inspired Nigerians nationwide, proving that commitment, resilience, and national pride are as vital as winning trophies.
