AFCON 2025 Best XI Features Nigeria’s Osimhen, Lookman, Bassey
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the official Team of the Tournament for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Morocco, following Senegal’s 1–0 extra-time victory over hosts Morocco in the final on January 18.
The Best XI recognises the tournament’s standout performers, with Senegal and Morocco dominating selections while Nigeria secured three key inclusions, highlighting the strong performance of the Super Eagles.
According to a CAF statement, the Technical Study Group (TSG) selected the squad based on consistency, impact, and excellence in all positions. The evaluation included live data, multi-angle video feeds, and on-site assessments to ensure a thorough and objective review.
The AFCON 2025 Best XI is as follows:
- Goalkeeper: Yassine Bounou (Morocco)
- Defenders: Achraf Hakimi (Morocco), Calvin Bassey (Nigeria), Moussa Niakhaté (Senegal), Noussair Mazraoui (Morocco)
- Midfielders: Idrissa Gueye (Senegal), Pape Gueye (Senegal), Ademola Lookman (Nigeria)
- Forwards: Sadio Mané (Senegal), Victor Osimhen (Nigeria), Brahim Díaz (Morocco)
The lineup underscores Senegal’s dominance at the tournament, with Sadio Mané named Player of the Tournament for his leadership, decisive performances, and overall influence on the pitch.
Nigeria, who finished third in the tournament, saw three of their players honoured: defender Calvin Bassey, winger Ademola Lookman, and striker Victor Osimhen. Their inclusion reflects the Super Eagles’ strong showing throughout the competition.
CAF highlighted Morocco’s contributions as well, led by goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, who conceded only two goals in seven matches. His teammates Achraf Hakimi, Noussair Mazraoui, and Brahim Díaz—the tournament’s top scorer—also earned spots in the Best XI.
The CAF statement emphasised the rigorous selection process:
“The Team of the Tournament was selected following an in-depth technical analysis conducted by CAF’s TSG, which implemented a fully integrated evaluation model throughout the competition. This process combined remote and on-site assessments, supported by live data platforms, multi-angle video feeds, and dedicated video analysts, ensuring a comprehensive and objective review of performances.”
This announcement further cements the recognition of Nigeria’s top talents and highlights their growing impact on African football, demonstrating that the Super Eagles’ stars can shine on the continental stage alongside champions Senegal and tournament finalists Morocco.
