EFCC Debunks Fake Wanted Poster of Comedian Sabinus
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has dismissed a viral “wanted” poster featuring popular Nigerian comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, widely known as Sabinus, describing it as fake and misleading.
The anti-graft agency issued the clarification via its official social media platforms, where it stamped the circulating poster with “FAKE NEWS” and warned those responsible to desist from spreading false information.
“Clout chaser, stop this now!” the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission stated in its response, making it clear that the document did not originate from the commission.
The doctored poster, which quickly gained traction online, falsely claimed that Sabinus was wanted for obtaining money under false pretence. It also included a fabricated address in Victoria Island, Lagos, adding to its appearance of authenticity.
Reports indicate that the design closely mirrored the official format typically used by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission when declaring individuals wanted, which contributed to the confusion and rapid spread across social media.
Despite the widespread circulation, the commission did not disclose whether it has identified those behind the fake poster.
Sabinus, known for his viral comedy skits and strong fan base both in Nigeria and abroad, has yet to publicly respond to the incident.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission used the opportunity to remind Nigerians of the dangers of misinformation, urging the public to always verify claims through official sources before sharing them.
The incident highlights the growing challenge of fake news in the digital age, especially when manipulated content is designed to appear credible.
