Nigeria and China Celebrate First International Taijiquan Day in Abuja

Nigeria and China have strengthened their cultural ties as both countries celebrated the first International Taijiquan Day in Abuja. The event, held at the China Cultural Centre, brought together government officials, cultural leaders, and members of the diplomatic community.

Speaking at the event, Yang Jianxing, Cultural Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria and Director of the China Cultural Centre, described Taijiquan, also known as Tai Chi, as an important part of Chinese culture with a long history. He noted that the practice is now enjoyed by millions of people in more than 180 countries around the world.

Taijiquan was added to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2020, showing its global importance. According to Yang, March 21 was officially declared International Taijiquan Day in 2025, making it the first international day named after a martial art.

He explained that the date aligns with the spring equinox, symbolizing balance and harmony, which are key principles of Taijiquan. He also highlighted its health benefits, saying it helps improve physical fitness, supports mental health, and can reduce stress while preventing certain diseases.

He added that China plans to introduce zero-tariff policies for 53 African countries, including Nigeria, to boost trade and economic growth.

Speaking at the event, Mrs. Olubunmi Olowookere of the FCT Administration described Tai Chi as a form of “moving meditation” that supports both physical and mental well-being. She encouraged Nigerians to adopt the practice, noting that it is simple, affordable, and suitable for people of all ages.

Also, Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, described the event as a blend of culture, health, education, and lifestyle. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with China and promoting shared growth.

The event featured Taijiquan demonstrations, including sword and fan routines, as well as cultural performances that combined Nigerian and Chinese traditions. Organisers said the celebration is part of ongoing efforts to deepen cultural understanding and strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.
