INEC Delay Hinders NNPP Membership Drive Ahead of 2027 Elections

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has raised concerns over delays by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in updating the party’s current leadership on its website, a move that is slowing the party’s membership registration drive nationwide.

This was disclosed in a statement by Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, Founder and Chairman of the NNPP Board of Trustees, on Thursday in Lagos. The party noted that the electronic registration of members, mandated by INEC for participation in the 2027 general elections, has been significantly affected by the ongoing leadership dispute within the NNPP.

Dr. Aniebonam explained that the party’s registration process has been hampered due to the unresolved conflict between the Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso-led faction and the Agbo Major-led National Working Committee (NWC). He said, “INEC is yet to obey the court order directing it to recognise the Agbo Major-led National Working Committee of the NNPP. The delay led to NNPP not fielding candidates in some elections in the past, which is regrettable and embarrassing.”

He added that the uncertainty is creating scepticism among members, particularly those aspiring to political positions, about NNPP’s readiness for the 2027 elections. “Most of our members, especially those with ambition to run for political offices, are becoming sceptical about NNPP’s ability to be part of the 2027 general elections,” he said.

Despite these challenges, Dr. Aniebonam confirmed that the NNPP’s e-registration portal is now active and open to members and intending members nationwide. He urged patience among stakeholders while expressing optimism that INEC would resolve the matter swiftly.

“We are optimistic that INEC will do the needful without further delay, and it’s our hope that members who left the party in the wake of defections shall return. The exit of Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State and a few others due to escalating court cases can be understood, but we are not giving up hope,” he said, emphasizing the party’s readiness for a stronger performance in the 2027 polls.

Dr. Aniebonam also reiterated that the Kwankwaso faction, including Elder Buba Galadima, remains expelled from the party, stating that the move serves as a lesson that anti-party activities have consequences.

The NNPP’s statement highlights the challenges political parties face in navigating internal disputes while trying to comply with INEC’s new electronic membership registration requirements, especially as the 2027 elections approach.
