Sowore Leads Protest in Abia Demanding Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

Nigerian human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has led a protest in Abia State calling for the release of detained separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu. The demonstration took place around the busy Ariaria International Market, one of the largest and most active commercial centres in southeastern Nigeria.

The protest drew the attention of traders, shoppers, and residents as participants marched through different sections of the market carrying banners and chanting solidarity slogans. Demonstrators called for the freedom of Kanu, who is the leader of the separatist group Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

One of the banners displayed prominently by protesters carried the message: “Coalition of Lovers of Freedom – Free Our Leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.” As the procession moved through the crowded market environment, the chants and placards quickly attracted the attention of people working and trading within the market corridors.

The march began with a relatively small number of participants but gradually grew as more individuals joined the demonstration along the route. As the protesters moved deeper into the market, the crowd expanded and the gathering turned into a more visible public event, drawing curiosity from traders and passersby who paused their activities to watch the unfolding scene.

Sowore’s presence at the protest added further attention to the demonstration. The activist, known for his outspoken criticism of government policies and advocacy for civil rights, walked alongside protesters while they continued their march through several sections of the market, including the A-Line area.

Ariaria International Market is typically known for its intense commercial activity, with thousands of traders operating daily. However, during the protest, the usual atmosphere of bargaining and trading was briefly replaced by chants and coordinated movement from demonstrators waving banners and placards.

The protest reflects ongoing agitation by supporters of Nnamdi Kanu across parts of southeastern Nigeria. Many of his followers have continued to demand his release, arguing that his detention remains a major political and legal issue in the region.

Kanu has been a central figure in the separatist movement advocating for the independence of Biafra, a cause that has generated strong reactions both from supporters and from the Nigerian government. His detention has led to several protests and campaigns by supporters who believe he should be released.
