Tiwa Savage Opens Up About Hidden Struggles as She Launches Foundation for Young African Creatives

Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage has spoken about the hidden struggles behind her rise to fame while unveiling a new foundation designed to support emerging African talents in the music industry.

The award-winning singer made the revelation while announcing the launch of her music foundation, an initiative aimed at helping young creatives navigate the challenges of building a career in the entertainment industry. Despite the new project, Tiwa Savage made it clear that she has no intention of stepping away from music anytime soon.

According to the singer, the idea for the foundation was inspired by her own journey and the opportunities she received earlier in life when she studied at Berklee College of Music in the United States. She explained that attending the prestigious institution on a scholarship significantly changed the direction of her life and career.

“I went to Berklee College of Music as a scholarship student. Someone made a decision to invest in me when I didn’t have the full means to invest in myself, and that changed the entire direction of my life,” she said.

Tiwa Savage noted that her time at Berklee not only helped refine her musical abilities but also exposed her to the business side of the music industry. According to her, the experience helped her understand how artists can transform talent into a sustainable career.

Now with years of global success and industry experience, the singer believes she is in a strong position to create opportunities for the next generation of African creatives.

“Now I’m at a point where I have the platform, the relationships and the credibility to build something real — a proper, structured and lasting initiative,” she said.

Reflecting on her career, Tiwa Savage admitted that many people often assume her success came easily because of the fame, awards and international recognition she has achieved. However, she explained that her journey to the top involved numerous challenges that many fans and observers may not be aware of.

“People see the stages, the collaborations, the covers and the accolades and assume the path was straighter than it was. It wasn’t,” she said.

Over the years, Tiwa Savage has become one of Africa’s most influential female artists and a key figure in the global rise of Afrobeats. Her music, performances and collaborations have helped showcase Nigerian and African music to international audiences.

She emphasised that success in the music industry requires more than just talent, stressing the importance of knowledge and understanding the business side of entertainment.

“A career in this industry requires more than talent. It requires knowledge — understanding your rights, your contracts and your worth,” she explained.

Addressing speculation that the foundation might signal a possible retirement from music, Tiwa Savage dismissed the idea, clarifying that the initiative is closely connected to her music career rather than a step away from it.

“The foundation doesn’t exist separate from my music career; it exists because of it. If anything, this makes me more committed to music, not less,” she said.

Through both her music and the newly launched foundation, Tiwa Savage said she hopes to inspire a new generation of African creatives to believe in their talents and pursue their dreams, even when opportunities appear limited. She added that the initiative is designed to support young artists who have passion and potential but may lack access to the resources and mentorship needed to succeed in the highly competitive music industry.
