Sultan of Sokoto Declares Start of Ramadan in Nigeria

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has officially announced the start of the holy month of Ramadan in Nigeria. This announcement follows the confirmed sighting of the new moon, based on reports from the National Moon Sighting Committee and other Islamic leaders across the country.

According to a statement signed by Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Sokoto, Muslim faithful in Nigeria are expected to begin fasting on 18 February 2026.

The Sultan encouraged Muslims to use the holy month as a time to increase prayers for peace, unity, and the development of the nation. He also urged the faithful to show kindness, engage in charity, and practice good neighbourliness throughout Ramadan.
