Omotola Warns: Marrying Into Hostile Families Is Not Worth It

Veteran Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has shared heartfelt advice for couples dealing with disapproval from their partner’s family, warning that marrying into a hostile family may not be worth the emotional strain.

Speaking in a recent interview on The Morayo Show, the actress encouraged individuals to make genuine efforts to build understanding and trust with their spouse’s relatives. According to her, patience and consistent engagement can sometimes help change negative perceptions.

Omotola explained that early family conflicts often stem from stereotypes, misconceptions, or cultural and ethnic biases. She noted that some families may form opinions based on where a person comes from or preconceived beliefs they already hold.

“But through life, as an Omotola, I would advise that if the family of your spouse doesn’t like you, try everything you possibly can to make them understand you,” she said.

However, she also acknowledged that not every situation can be resolved. According to the actress, some parents may be firmly set in their views, regardless of efforts made to win them over.

“There are some parents who are simply determined not to like you. There is nothing you’re going to do. They already have prejudices,” she added.

Omotola stressed that marriage is already a demanding, lifelong commitment. Starting that journey without family support can make it even more difficult. While some families may eventually soften their stance, she warned that such changes may not always be permanent.

“Some might change their mind, even that is dicey, because it means that they might change it again. But my advice is: it’s truly not worth it. Marriage in itself is already an institution where you’re going to face a lot. It’s a lifetime journey,” she said.

The actress urged couples to think carefully before entering a union where hostility persists from the beginning. She emphasized that love alone may not be enough if there is consistent opposition from close relatives.

“You want to go in, in love, because every step of the way you’re going to need support. So if these people are not going to support you from the beginning, you’re going to have a very rough journey,” she concluded.
