DJ Big N Explains How Nigerian Artists Can Increase Their Grammy Winning Chances

Mavin Records DJ, Nonso Temisan Ajufo, widely known as DJ Big N, has shared his thoughts on how Nigerian artists can improve their chances of winning at the Grammy Awards. His comments came after several Nigerian stars lost in a major category at the latest Grammy ceremony.

At the 68th Annual Grammy Awards, top Nigerian artists including Davido, Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, Omah Lay, and Wizkid were nominated in the Best African Music Performance category. However, the award went to South African singer Tyla, leaving many Nigerian fans disappointed.

Reacting to the outcome, DJ Big N said the losses should not only bring sadness but also reflection. According to him, Nigerian musicians need to become more active in the American music space if they truly want to secure Grammy victories in the future.

He explained that simply releasing good music is not enough. DJ Big N pointed out that international awards like the Grammys involve year-round engagement, networking, and participation in key music events and seminars in the United States.

Using legendary Beninese singer Angélique Kidjo as an example, he said her success is not only because of her talent but also because of her strong presence in global music circles. He noted that Kidjo regularly attends important music events and stays involved in activities linked to the Recording Academy, the body responsible for the Grammys.

DJ Big N also encouraged Nigerian artists to become members of the Recording Academy’s voting body. He said this would allow them to understand the system better and take part in the decision-making process that shapes Grammy outcomes each year.

In his message shared on social media, he stressed that African artists must go beyond award night appearances. According to him, being visible, building relationships, and contributing to the music community throughout the year can make a big difference.

Despite the recent loss, DJ Big N remains hopeful. He believes Nigerian artists have the talent and global influence needed to win more Grammys in the future, but added that strategic involvement and industry participation will be key to turning nominations into wins.
