Speed Darlington Reveals How Moving to America Nearly Ruined Him

Controversial Nigerian musician Speed Darlington, popularly known as Akpi, has shared the harsh realities he faced while living in the United States, revealing how the decision to emigrate, widely called “Japa,” nearly destroyed him both mentally and physically.

In a candid video shared on Instagram, Darlington explained that while he appreciated the opportunities in the U.S., the societal structure was not suited for his well-being. He recounted multiple arrests that left him with a criminal record, which he described as the only tangible outcome of his American stay. The experience drained his confidence and made life abroad nearly unbearable.

Darlington further revealed that his thick Nigerian accent made social interactions difficult, particularly with women, and contributed to feelings of isolation. These challenges led him into loneliness and unhealthy coping habits, painting a picture of life in America that many Nigerians chasing the American dream might not anticipate.

Returning to Nigeria, according to Darlington, restored his sense of self, freedom, and confidence. He emphasized that his wealth and achievements are the result of support from Nigerians, both at home and abroad, rather than his years in the U.S. The singer expressed concern about the harsh treatment of immigrants in America, noting that even white women face challenges, which would likely be more severe for Africans.

Reflecting on his journey, Darlington advised that it is better to live freely in Nigeria than remain trapped in America’s restrictive system. While he is considering giving up his American papers, he admitted his mother’s presence in the U.S. makes him hesitant.

The musician’s story resonated widely on social media, with fans praising his honesty and intelligence. Comments highlighted admiration for his authenticity, resilience, and capacity to educate while entertaining. Many agreed that his message reflects the real experiences of Africans living abroad.

Earlier, Darlington also recounted a personal ordeal related to his boxing career. He accused his trainer of neglecting him before a match against Portable, claiming the trainer’s actions undermined his preparation and contributed to his first-round technical knockout loss.

Through both his music and candid revelations, Speed Darlington continues to offer insights into the challenges of chasing dreams abroad while highlighting the value of returning home and building success within Nigeria.
