Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde Launches Omololu Olunloyo Leisure Park to Preserve State’s Cultural Heritage
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde on Thursday officially inaugurated the Omololu Olunloyo Leisure Park, situated along Airport Road, Alakia, in Ibadan. Represented by his deputy, Mr. Bayo Lawal, the governor revealed that the new park is designed to serve as a central hub for preserving and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Oyo State.
Governor Makinde explained that the leisure park, developed on a previously abandoned site, would provide both residents and visitors with access to artefacts and facilities that reflect the traditions and unique characteristics of the state’s diverse geopolitical zones. He emphasized that the park was also established to honour Dr. Olunloyo for his contributions to Oyo State and Nigeria, describing him as a brilliant and remarkable personality.
“This park is unique in many respects. We have cherished artefacts here that symbolize our culture and tradition across Oyo State, from Ibarapa to Oke Ogun, Ogbomosho, and Ibadan. All these will help us always keep our culture in focus,” Makinde said.
The governor further urged the public to maintain the park and use it strictly for its intended purpose, highlighting the importance of collective responsibility in preserving cultural landmarks.
The State Commissioner for Public Works, Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. Mojeed Mogbonjubola, described the park as a major milestone in Governor Makinde’s vision to transform Ibadan’s skyline while enhancing the beauty of the fast-growing city. He noted that the project was conceived as a hub for leisure, history, and culture, combining urban development with cultural preservation.
Mogbonjubola added that the park would contribute to Ibadan’s aesthetic appeal while reinforcing the governor’s commitment to creating sustainable public spaces that educate, entertain, and preserve the state’s heritage for future generations.
The Omololu Olunloyo Leisure Park is expected to become a key destination for cultural tourism in Ibadan, attracting visitors interested in exploring Oyo State’s rich history, traditional artefacts, and scenic urban spaces.
