TikTok Restricts Late Night Live Streaming for Nigerian Users

TikTok has temporarily restricted access to its LIVE feature for users in Nigeria during late-night hours. The move was announced through an in-app notification sent to eligible creators as part of what the platform described as a safety investigation.

According to the notice sent around midnight on Sunday, TikTok said it was limiting late-night LIVE sessions in Nigeria to ensure the platform remains safe and to protect its community. The restriction also stopped Nigerian creators from watching LIVE broadcasts from other countries during that period.

Only creators with at least 1,000 followers, which is the minimum requirement to host a LIVE session, received the notification. Many creators later confirmed that all LIVE activities were completely unavailable throughout the night.

Despite the temporary shutdown, TikTok assured creators that their LIVE gifting balances and previous earnings were safe. This helped to calm fears among creators who rely on LIVE streams as a source of income.

By Monday morning, LIVE access had been restored. The sudden restriction quickly became a topic of discussion on social media, with users sharing theories and asking TikTok to clarify the reason behind the nationwide pause.

Late-night hours are usually peak periods for Nigerian streamers. Many creators host entertainment shows, gaming sessions, trend discussions, and interactive chats during these hours, often attracting large audiences and virtual gifts.

The development follows the release of TikTok’s West Africa safety data, where the company revealed it had taken down millions of LIVE sessions and videos globally for violating its guidelines. In Nigeria alone, tens of thousands of LIVE streams were removed during the second quarter of 2025.

Why did TikTok restrict LIVE streaming in Nigeria?
TikTok said the restriction was part of a temporary safety investigation aimed at protecting users and keeping the platform secure.
