Mbappé Approaches Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid Goal Record – Xabi Alonso
Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso has said French forward Kylian Mbappé is on the verge of making history at the club by closing in on a long-standing goal record set by Cristiano Ronaldo. According to the coach, Mbappé’s form, ambition, and influence remind him strongly of the Portuguese legend.
Mbappé has enjoyed an outstanding year with Real Madrid, scoring 55 goals in the 2025 calendar year so far. This puts him just four goals away from matching Ronaldo’s record of 59 goals scored in 2013, which remains the highest by a Real Madrid player in a single calendar year.
Speaking at a news conference, Alonso said Mbappé is not only scoring goals but also showing leadership qualities similar to Ronaldo. He described the French star as a special player whose hunger for success spreads throughout the team. According to Alonso, Mbappé’s drive and winning mentality are key reasons he is being compared with Ronaldo.
“Kylian is on his way to making history at Real Madrid like Cristiano did,” Alonso said. “It is not just about the number of goals, but also the ambition and influence he brings to the team. He inspires others with his hunger to win.”
Mbappé’s current form shows no sign of slowing down. After winning the European Golden Shoe and finishing as La Liga’s top scorer last season with 31 goals, he has raised his level even further this campaign. The French forward has already scored 16 goals in 15 league games and added nine goals in just five Champions League matches.
The comparisons with Ronaldo have grown stronger in Spain, especially given Mbappé’s efficiency in front of goal and his ability to decide games. As a child, Mbappé openly admired Ronaldo and once revealed that he had posters of the former Real Madrid star on his bedroom wall.
Mbappé now has several matches to chase the record. Real Madrid will face Celta Vigo in La Liga, followed by a major Champions League clash against Manchester City on December 10. League matches against Alaves and Sevilla also present further opportunities for the French striker to reach or surpass Ronaldo’s 59-goal mark.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored 450 goals in 438 appearances for Real Madrid during his legendary spell at the club. Mbappé, who joined from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024, has already scored 69 goals in 79 matches, highlighting his rapid impact at the Bernabéu.
With momentum on his side and several key fixtures ahead, Mbappé appears well placed to write his name into Real Madrid’s history books, just as his idol once did.
