Sokoto Government Approves N1.6bn to Renovate Six General Hospitals

The Sokoto State Government has approved N1.66 billion for the renovation of six additional General Hospitals across the state, marking a major step in its ongoing efforts to improve healthcare delivery for residents. The approval was announced after the State Executive Council meeting, with officials describing the move as part of a broader plan to make public hospitals more functional and accessible.

Briefing journalists, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Faruk Wurno, explained that the renovation would cover hospitals in Yabo, Shagari, Sabon Birni, Tangaza, Goronyo, and the WCWC Hospital in Sokoto metropolis. He disclosed that the contract sums include N290.1 million for Yabo, N382.4 million for Shagari, N237.1 million for Sabon Birni, N272.2 million for Tangaza, N291.3 million for Goronyo, and N187.9 million for WCWC Hospital, Sokoto.

According to the commissioner, the Sokoto hospital renovation approval is part of a strategic plan to upgrade health facilities across the state’s 23 local government areas. He said the goal is to ensure that hospitals are properly equipped to deliver quality healthcare services, especially for people in rural communities who often struggle to access medical care.

Dr Wurno also revealed that the state has approved N100.076 million for the procurement of HIV/AIDS testing kits and other consumables. He explained that this intervention became necessary following the withdrawal of certain health programme support by the United States government, stressing that the state could not afford any disruption in HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention services.

He added that the government was fully committed to bridging the gap left by donor withdrawal to protect vulnerable patients and sustain ongoing public health gains. According to him, maintaining uninterrupted access to testing and treatment remains a top priority for the administration.

Also speaking after the council meeting, the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr Abubakar Zayyana, said the council approved the 2026 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF), projected at N702.5 billion. He noted that the framework provides a realistic financial roadmap for the state and reflects its core development priorities.

The Commissioner for Information, Sambo Bello Danchadi, said the approvals taken by the council clearly show the government’s commitment to development across key sectors. He explained that beyond healthcare, approvals were also granted for education projects, including the procurement of laptops, computers, textbooks, and exercise books through SUBEB.

In addition, the council approved major infrastructure and cultural projects, such as drainage construction along the Zagga–Jaredi Road, drainage works near the Orthopaedic Hospital in Wamakko, and the upgrade of the Waziri Junaidu History and Culture Bureau. Declaring the meeting open, Governor Ahmed Aliyu reiterated his administration’s determination to invest in projects that will improve living standards and drive socio-economic development across Sokoto State.
