DJ Neptune Speaks Out on Nigerian Music Industry Sidelining Veterans
Popular Nigerian disc jockey and music producer Imohiosen Patrick, widely known as DJ Neptune, has raised serious concerns about the treatment of veteran artists in the Nigerian music industry. According to the acclaimed DJ, many experienced creatives are quickly sidelined once they reach a certain level of success, a trend he describes as a structural problem within the industry.
In a recent interview with Hip TV, DJ Neptune contrasted the Nigerian music scene with Western music industries, where veteran artists continue to thrive alongside newcomers. “In Nigeria, once you reach a certain level, they push you aside like, ‘Oya go to that corner, we’re done with you.’ It’s a structural problem. Abroad, the OGs are still as relevant as the newbies. We need to address the structural issues,” he said.
The DJ highlighted the need for systemic changes that allow both young and experienced artists to coexist and grow in the industry. He stressed that the sidelining of seasoned creatives not only limits their contribution but also deprives the industry of mentorship opportunities for emerging talent.
On staying relevant in an ever-evolving music landscape, DJ Neptune shared his personal strategy. He explained that while he does not plan to remain in the spotlight indefinitely, he has consistently sought to reinvent himself to adapt to changing trends. “Although I don’t plan to do this all my life, when it’s time to take a bow, I will. But what I have just done over the years is that I know when it’s time to re-invent. That’s life. Things are changing, so you need to move with the times,” he said.
