Tinubu Praises Super Eagles, Urges Focus on 2026 African Nations Cup
President Bola Tinubu has commended the Super Eagles for their efforts in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, despite their narrow loss to DR Congo in a playoff on Sunday. The match ended Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the World Cup for the second consecutive tournament.
The game, played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, ended 1–1 after 120 minutes of regulation and extra time, forcing a penalty shootout. Nigeria initially took the lead in the third minute through Frank Onyeka, but DR Congo equalised in the 32nd minute via M. Elia.
During extra time, both teams had chances to score. Nigeria’s Tolu Arokodare missed a crucial header, while goalkeeper Nwabali made a key save from a DR Congo free kick. Despite these opportunities, neither side could break the deadlock, leading to penalties.
The penalty shootout was decisive. Nigeria’s Calvin Bassey and Moses Simon missed early attempts, while Nwabali denied DR Congo’s first penalty. DR Congo eventually won 4–3 on penalties, advancing to the intercontinental playoff for a chance to qualify for the expanded 48-team World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
In a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu praised the Super Eagles’ determination and effort. “Notwithstanding the unfortunate loss, we must commend the players and continue to support them,” he said.
The President urged Nigerian football stakeholders to review the team’s performance carefully. He stressed the need to identify gaps and make improvements, saying, “Our football administrators, players, and all stakeholders must go back to the drawing board.”
Tinubu also highlighted the importance of shifting focus to the 2026 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), scheduled for January to February 2026 in Morocco. He encouraged the team to learn from the World Cup qualifiers and use those lessons to regain lost glory in the continental tournament.
Finally, the President called on Nigerians to continue supporting the Super Eagles. He praised the players’ resilience and commitment, noting that despite the disappointment, the team showed determination and professionalism throughout both the playoff match and the high-pressure penalty shootout.
