9ice Plans to Get a Tribal Mark at 50 to Honour His Father
Indigenous singer Abolore Adegbola Akande, better known as 9ice, has revealed plans to get a tribal mark when he turns 50, as a tribute to his father, who proudly bears the same mark.
In a video shared on TikTok, the Ogbomosho-born artist said his decision was inspired by his desire to reconnect with his roots and preserve his family tradition. “By the time I’m 50, I will get the same mark as my dad. That’s what I want to do for my birthday. A lot of my boys said I won’t do that, but you will see,” he said confidently.
Known for blending Yoruba proverbs and cultural expressions into his music, 9ice explained that the move reflects his continued journey toward embracing his heritage and traditional beliefs.
The singer’s statement has sparked conversations among fans, with many praising his commitment to cultural identity, while others debated whether tribal marks still hold relevance in modern society.
Tribal marks, once seen as a symbol of beauty, identity, and origin, were also used to identify people from different ethnic groups. However, their popularity has declined over the years as modern lifestyles and globalisation reshape perceptions of traditional practices.
In a previous interview with Nancy Isime in August 2025, 9ice revealed that he had embraced Ifa worship, becoming a traditionalist after surviving a serious illness. He admitted that the experience deepened his appreciation for African spirituality and cultural authenticity.
Reflecting on his life and career, 9ice said he now sees culture not just as a way of life but as a form of self-expression and healing. His 50th birthday plan, he noted, will mark not just a milestone but a return to his roots.
