Bimbo Akintola Explains Why Nigerians Should Embrace Polygamy

Nollywood actress Bimbo Akintola has shared her strong views on marriage and why she believes Nigerians need to embrace polygamy. Known for her outspoken takes on love and relationships, the actress said that society should accept polygamy as part of culture and reality.

In a recent episode of the Talk to B podcast hosted by actress Biola Adebayo, Bimbo argued that polygamy is not only cultural but also practical in today’s world. She explained that many people insist marriage is important, yet the number of men is not enough for the growing female population. According to her, “if marriage is everything, then two women to one man makes sense when men are fewer.”

The actress recalled how polygamy was very common in past generations. She said most people in Generation X grew up seeing parents or relatives with two or three wives. While it came with challenges, she stressed that some women still prefer being in polygamous unions for peace of mind. Sharing a story, she noted that a woman once got her husband a second wife because his libido was too high for her to handle, and this gave her relief.

Bimbo also challenged Nigerians to rethink how they raise children if they truly want monogamy. She argued that men who cheat or live polygamous lifestyles were shaped by the values they learned from their upbringing. Instead of only teaching daughters to be modest, she urged parents to also raise sons with self-control and respect for marriage.

According to her, “if you want a faithful society, then train your sons the same way you train your daughters. Teach boys that their body is also the temple of God.” She added that people should focus on raising better men rather than simply blaming women for marital issues.

The actress further pointed out that marriages often change after children arrive. She said many women accept sacrifices while managing with their husbands, but once kids are born, the priorities shift. For her, children make new demands, and no mother wants her children to suffer, which often leads to conflict in relationships.

Bimbo admitted that it is not only women who suffer, as some men also remain stuck in unhappy marriages. She explained that relationships break down for many reasons, and society should be more open to different solutions, including polygamy, to reduce family problems.

Her views have sparked fresh debates on marriage and culture in Nigeria, especially as polygamy continues to divide opinions. While some see it as outdated, others like Bimbo believe it remains relevant and could even help reduce issues of infidelity and broken homes if embraced properly.
