FG To Hold Low-Key Independence Anniversary Celebration Minister Confirms

The Federal Government has announced that Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary will be marked with a low-key celebration. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, revealed this during a Pre-Independence World Press Conference held on Monday in Abuja.

According to Idris, the theme for this year’s celebration is “All Hands on Deck.” He explained that the activities began with Jummat Prayers on Friday, followed by a Thanksgiving Service on Sunday. He further disclosed that the official unveiling of the National Value Charter, championed by the National Orientation Agency (NOA), will also be part of the commemoration.

Speaking on the importance of the charter, Idris said it is designed to promote national pride, responsible citizenship, and shared values. The framework emphasizes both the government’s responsibilities to Nigerians and the citizens’ obligations to the country.

Part of the planned activities also includes a National Students’ Debate, aimed at engaging young people in discussions about Nigeria’s progress and future. This, according to the minister, is in line with the government’s drive to involve youths in building a united and value-driven nation.

The National Value Charter is divided into two sections. The “Nigerian Promise” outlines the government’s commitments to equality, democracy, inclusivity, entrepreneurship, peace, and freedom. On the other hand, the “Citizens’ Code” sets out responsibilities such as discipline, accountability, environmental awareness, tolerance, leadership, and resilience.

The NOA is expected to roll out sensitisation campaigns across the country to ensure Nigerians understand and embrace the principles of the charter. The agency will also collaborate with community leaders and leverage digital platforms to strengthen awareness and build unity among citizens.

Idris stressed that the government wants the Independence celebration to remain modest but meaningful. He added that the unveiling of the National Value Charter represents a major step toward fostering stronger national values, unity, and patriotism among Nigerians.

While this year’s activities may not feature the large parades of the past, the Federal Government maintains that the focus is on instilling values that will outlast the celebrations themselves.
