NASRDA Connects Nigerian Students With NASA Astronaut in Historic Space Station Session
The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) has made history by successfully connecting Nigerian students to the International Space Station (ISS) for a live interactive session with NASA astronaut Zena Cardman. The groundbreaking event, the first of its kind in Nigeria, took place at NASRDA headquarters in Abuja and gathered students from various schools across the Federal Capital Territory.
The Director of Media and Corporate Communications, Dr. Felix Ale, confirmed the achievement in a statement on Tuesday. He noted that the initiative was designed to inspire students and nurture their interest in space science and technology.
The event was attended by NASRDA’s Director-General, Dr. Matthew Adepoju, along with the agency’s top management, school administrators, and other stakeholders in the education and technology sector. In his address, Dr. Adepoju described the development as a milestone for Africa’s space exploration journey. He emphasized that the project would help raise a new generation of Nigerians passionate about science and innovation.
During the programme, Mr. Tope Owolabi from NASRDA’s Department of Physical and Life Sciences delivered a presentation on the global importance of space science. His talk highlighted key areas such as earth observation, satellite technology, and medical innovations that space research contributes to worldwide.
The highlight of the event was a live question-and-answer session moderated by international facilitators, where students had the opportunity to speak directly with NASA astronaut Zena Cardman. She provided insightful answers, sparking curiosity and excitement among the students, who described the experience as both educational and inspiring.
Programme Coordinator, Mrs. Joy Olayiwola, and GeoApps Plus Limited, the technical partner of the event, received commendation from Dr. Adepoju for their roles in making the session a success. GeoApps Plus Managing Director, Mr. Emmanuel Onwuabuariri, praised NASRDA’s leadership and promised even bigger and more impactful editions in the future.
The event concluded with the presentation of certificates of attendance to participating schools. Dr. Adepoju urged the students to embrace continuous learning and to use their talents in building Nigeria’s future in science, technology, and innovation.
