Veteran Nollywood actress Rita Edochie has sparked heated conversations online after openly condemning women who agree to become second wives.
On Sunday, September 21, 2025, the actress shared a video on Instagram featuring a cleric preaching against polygamy and relationships with already married men. In the sermon, the preacher described such unions as ungodly and damaging to families.
Rita Edochie, who has consistently voiced support for May Edochie, the estranged wife of actor Yul Edochie, strongly aligned herself with the message. She explained that women who choose to become second wives are not motivated by love or destiny but by greed and selfishness.
In her post, Rita argued that such decisions only bring sorrow to other women while tearing families apart. She stressed that no woman should justify the act of becoming a second wife, as it robs another woman of peace and stability in her home.
According to the actress, women who willingly take on this role should not expect admiration or celebration. Instead, she described them as “usurpers” who feed on another woman’s pain.
Her exact words read: “You’re a second wife, you are nothing but a witch. You are not innocent, you are not special, you are just greedy. You have chosen to feed on another woman’s tears, to build your happiness on someone else’s pain. Do not call it love, it is wickedness. Do not call it destiny, it is covetousness. You stole what was not yours, and you expect to be celebrated? Never. A second wife is not a queen. She is a usurper. You are the thief that slipped into another woman’s home pretending to be a bride.”
Rita’s statement quickly went viral, drawing mixed reactions from fans and social media users. While many agreed with her bold stance, others argued that polygamy has long existed in African culture and should not always be viewed negatively.
