Charly Boy Shares How Peter Obi Surprised Him With a Bag of Fruits Instead of Money
Nigerian entertainer and activist Charles Oputa, better known as Charly Boy, has opened up about a touching gesture he once received from former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.
In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, Charly Boy shared a story he titled “The Day Peter Obi Surprised Me With Ghana Must Go.” According to him, Obi called around 1 a.m. to ask if he could visit his home early the next morning.
Writing in pidgin, Charly Boy recalled their conversation: “Peter Obi call me say, ‘My Senior bros, I wan come see you, but I no too sure if u fit don wake about the time I for like come.’ Like what time? I asked. ‘Maybe around 5:30 or 6.’”
Despite the unusual timing that would cut into his morning routine, Charly Boy agreed. He said Obi arrived at 5:45 a.m. sharp, proving himself to be punctual and true to his word.
The two men spent almost two hours together discussing Nigeria, politics, and family matters. It was only after Obi had left that Charly Boy checked the large “Ghana Must Go” bag Obi brought along. To his surprise, instead of money, the bag contained roasted groundnuts, alligator pepper, kola nuts, pawpaw, oranges, agara, mangoes, bananas, and more — all carefully handpicked by Obi himself.
Charly Boy said he was deeply moved by the thoughtful gift. Obi later explained to him: “Senior, I no fit give you money, but I fit give you this one, na my hand pick.”
For Charly Boy, the gesture carried more value than cash. “Sometimes na the little things go remind you say life no too hard. Na kolanut and bitter kola wey Obi dash me sweet me pass money,” he wrote.
The veteran entertainer, who has been one of Obi’s outspoken supporters, described him as “Okute” (meaning strong man) and said the act deepened his respect for him.
Charly Boy strongly backed Obi during the 2023 presidential elections and even pledged to walk naked on the streets if Obi had won his case at the election tribunal. On Charly Boy’s birthday that same year, Obi praised him as one of the few Nigerians who speak truth to power and challenge leaders without fear.
This heartwarming story has since drawn reactions from fans online, with many praising Obi’s humility and Charly Boy’s openness in sharing the encounter.
