FAAN Introduces Wheelchair Support and Special Services for Passengers with Disabilities

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced a new initiative to make air travel more inclusive for passengers who require mobility assistance. The authority confirmed that wheelchair support and other special services will now be available at airports across the country.

According to FAAN, the new service is designed to give passengers with disabilities, the elderly, and others in need of mobility a more dignified, safe, and comfortable travel experience. The authority said it wants to ensure that no traveller feels left behind when using Nigeria’s airports.

The announcement was made on Monday through a statement by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah. She explained that wheelchair services will now be offered from check-in to boarding and also on arrival. This means that passengers who request the service will be supported throughout their journey within the airport.

Orah further noted that trained staff have been assigned to assist travellers who need help navigating the airport. These staff members will provide guidance, ensure passengers are given priority at security points, and help with boarding procedures to make movement stress-free.

In addition to wheelchairs, FAAN also confirmed that airports have been upgraded with accessible facilities. Terminals now have designated restrooms, elevators, and other features that make them easier to use for travellers with special needs. This, according to FAAN, is part of its long-term plan to make Nigerian airports friendlier to all categories of travellers.

Passengers who require assistance have been advised to notify their airline or airport staff in advance. They can also request help upon arrival at the special assistance desk in the airport terminals. FAAN explained that early notification will make it easier to arrange smooth support for the travellers.

This new development reflects FAAN’s commitment to improving customer experience and aligning with international standards of inclusive air travel. The move has been welcomed by many as a positive step toward making air transportation in Nigeria accessible to all, regardless of age or physical condition.

With this initiative, FAAN has assured travellers that accessibility and comfort remain top priorities as Nigeria continues to improve its aviation services.
