NAFDAC raises alarm over fake Cowbell milk in circulation
The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted Nigerians to the circulation of counterfeit Cowbell “Our Milk” 12g sachet in the market.
In a public notice released on Friday, the agency confirmed that Promasidor Nigeria Ltd, the authorised manufacturer of Cowbell products, reported the existence of fake milk sachets that closely resemble the genuine product.
According to NAFDAC, the counterfeit products bear unauthorised use of Cowbell’s brand name, packaging design, trademark, and even carry the NAFDAC registration number. Investigations revealed that the fraudulent packaging being used had already been phased out by Promasidor in September 2023.

How to identify the fake sachets
NAFDAC explained that the original Cowbell milk is creamy in texture and uses the updated “Our Creamy Goodness” PNG artwork. Genuine products also have their batch details laser-printed, with coding placed in the designated coding area, while sealing and cutting are done automatically on the vertical sides.
In contrast, the counterfeit milk sachets appear less creamy and are packaged using the old “Our Milk” design. Their batch details are printed with ink instead of laser, coding is placed in the wrong area, and the sealing/cutting appears manually done—making them distinguishable from the authentic product.
Health risks of consuming counterfeit milk
The agency warned that consuming fake milk poses serious health and safety dangers. Counterfeit products may contain toxic substances, harmful additives, or diluted ingredients that fall short of food safety standards.
Possible risks include foodborne illnesses, allergic reactions, organ damage, and—in extreme cases—death. Vulnerable groups such as infants, children, pregnant women, and the elderly face the highest risks.
Steps being taken
NAFDAC has directed its zonal directors and state coordinators nationwide to intensify surveillance and mop up counterfeit Cowbell 12g sachet milk from markets and distribution chains.
The agency also urged distributors, retailers, and consumers to remain vigilant. Nigerians were advised to buy only from authorised suppliers and always check products’ authenticity and physical condition before consumption.
How to report fake products
Healthcare professionals and consumers are encouraged to report suspected counterfeit food products to the nearest NAFDAC office. Reports can also be made through:
- NAFDAC hotline: 0800-162-3322
- Email: [email protected]
- NAFDAC website: www.nafdac.gov.ng
- Email for adverse reactions: [email protected]
NAFDAC reassured the public that it is committed to safeguarding the health of Nigerians and will continue to clamp down on substandard and counterfeit food items.
