Jigawa Government Sets Up Committee to Review Land and Housing Policies

The Jigawa State Government has announced the formation of a technical committee to review land, housing, and urban development policies. This move is aimed at tackling the state’s housing deficit and improving land administration. The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Lands, Housing, Urban Planning, and Regional Development, Mr Garba Abdullahi, in a statement signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Yakubu, on Monday in Dutse.

According to Mr Abdullahi, the State Executive Council (SEC) approved and directed the committee to conduct a comprehensive review of existing policies to address several pressing issues. These include challenges in land allocation, housing development, and urban growth, as well as concerns about illegal land demarcation, double allocation, and recurring disputes between farmers and herders.

He explained that the committee’s work will focus on identifying structures that do not comply with urban development standards and creating updated policies that align with national frameworks, laws, and development strategies. Part of the task will also involve organising stakeholder engagement sessions to encourage consultations, dialogues, and expert input from various sectors. This will help in developing effective recommendations that strengthen the policies and ensure they meet the needs of the people.

Abdullahi emphasised that the goal is to create a technically sound, inclusive, and practical policy framework that reflects the realities, priorities, and strategic aspirations outlined in Governor Umar Namadi’s 12-point agenda. The revised policy is expected to better manage land resources, expand housing opportunities, and promote sustainable urban growth across the state.

The statement further revealed that the committee is expected to complete its review and submit its report within six weeks. The team will be chaired by Mr Garba Abdullahi, while the Commissioner for Environment, Nura Ibrahim, will serve as co-chair. Their combined expertise is expected to guide the process and ensure that the final policy recommendations are both effective and achievable.

This review is considered an important step toward resolving long-standing land and housing challenges in Jigawa State. With a fast-growing population and increasing demand for affordable housing, the government aims to use this opportunity to create a fairer, more efficient land administration system that supports both economic growth and community well-being.

If implemented successfully, the revised policies could help reduce conflicts over land, streamline allocation processes, and encourage investment in housing and infrastructure development in the state. The committee’s work will therefore play a crucial role in shaping Jigawa’s future urban landscape and ensuring that development efforts benefit all residents.
