LASU Resumes Full Academic and Administrative Activities After JAC Strike Ends

Students and staff of Lagos State University can now breathe a sigh of relief as the Joint Action Committee of staff unions has officially called off its over two-week-long industrial action. The decision means that full academic, administrative, and social activities will return to all university campuses starting Wednesday, August 13, 2025.

The announcement came after a resolution reached by the university’s Senate on Monday, August 11, 2025. According to the statement signed by Deputy Registrar Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, the decision follows the JAC’s meeting with Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, on Thursday, August 7, 2025. This meeting led to a productive agreement, paving the way for the strike to end and normal operations to resume.

The university management has confirmed that students can return to their hostels from Wednesday, August 13, across all campuses in Ojo, Ikeja, and Epe. This marks the official reopening of the institution, which had been shut down since July 31, 2025, due to the strike.

One major highlight of the resumption is the scheduling of the 2024/2025 second-semester examinations. These exams, which were previously put on hold due to the industrial action, will now commence on Monday, August 18, 2025. Students are urged to return to campus on time and prepare thoroughly for their papers.

It will be recalled that the Senate had earlier suspended all academic and social activities in a virtual meeting held on Saturday, August 2, 2025. This decision was in direct response to the JAC strike, which had paralyzed teaching, administrative functions, and other key services at the university.

For both students and staff, the resumption means a return to normalcy and an opportunity to make up for lost time. The management is optimistic that the remaining part of the academic calendar will run smoothly, ensuring minimal disruption to learning and examinations.

This latest development not only restores academic order but also boosts morale within the LASU community. Many see it as a positive step forward in strengthening dialogue between staff unions and university management to avoid future disruptions.
