INEC to Start Online Voter Registration in Akwa Ibom Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it will begin online voter registration in Akwa Ibom State from August 18, 2025, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This was revealed by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for the state, Obo Effanga, during his first press briefing at the INEC office in Uyo on Wednesday.

According to Effanga, the voter registration process will start online first. From August 18, eligible voters in Akwa Ibom can visit the INEC portal to begin their registration online. After completing the online process, they will need to go to any INEC office in the state for biometric capturing, which includes fingerprints and a photograph.

“People who want to register to vote can go online and start the process. After that, they will only come physically for the capture of photographs and fingerprints,” he explained.

He also said the portal will allow users to transfer their voter registration to a new location, correct mistakes in their voter data, or request updates to their voter cards.

“If you didn’t collect your card before or want to fix errors or change your polling unit, you can do it online or visit us from August 25,” he added.

From August 25, physical registration will also begin across INEC local government offices in Akwa Ibom. Those who start the process online are required to complete it in person by visiting their local INEC office for fingerprint and photo capture.

Effanga urged residents who had earlier begun their registration online but never completed it to visit the office to finish the process.

He reminded the public that the exercise would help voters who:

  • Didn’t collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs)
  • Want to correct details on their cards
  • Need to transfer to another polling unit
  • Have damaged or lost cards and need reprints

Effanga warned against multiple registrations, explaining that anyone who tries to register again instead of requesting a card reprint will have their registration invalidated.

This online registration process aims to make it easier for more Nigerians to register ahead of the 2027 polls and ensure better access to voting.
