Netizens React Strongly to Falz’s Comment on Fornication

Nigerian rapper Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has sparked a heated debate online after making a controversial statement about fornication. On Sunday, he posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Fornication is not a sin.”

The comment quickly gained attention, with many people, particularly from the religious community, strongly criticizing him. Many users on social media cited Bible verses to counter Falz’s claim, emphasizing that fornication is indeed considered a sin in Christian teachings.

One user, Olivia, under the handle #Blessing_, referenced several Bible verses to express her disapproval. “1 Cor. 6:18 tells us to flee from it, as it is even a sin against one’s own body. The Bible also asks believers in 1 Cor. 5:9-11 to avoid fornicators,” she wrote. “God instructed us to resist all sin, but when it comes to fornication — a sin of the flesh — He asked us to flee.”

Another user, Fash Daddy, simply reiterated, “Fornication is a sin, FLEE. Fornication is a sin, FLEE. Fornication is a sin, FLEE.”

Some Twitter users were not so critical, with a few suggesting that Falz was merely seeking attention. “You dey follow chase clout at your age,” wrote Dr Penking. Meanwhile, Mr Wrong But Right expressed disappointment, particularly because Falz is also a lawyer, saying, “I’m shocked to see this kind of tweet from a lawyer. May God have mercy.”

However, not all reactions were negative. Some supporters sided with Falz, arguing that fornication is not universally viewed as a sin, especially from a legal or cultural perspective. One user, DataCraftman, tweeted, “Sin is for religious people, and fornication to them is a sin. Fornication is a legal act in our country. Leave sin for people wey know about am jare.”

Another user, Seunidowusings, defended Falz, stating, “He is right. Fornication is not a sin in the Bible — it is a Western or modern construct.” She referenced Jewish tradition, suggesting that consensual sex did not require marriage under certain conditions. “Exodus 22:16 says: ‘If a man seduces a virgin who is not pledged to be married and sleeps with her, he must pay the bride-price, and she shall be his wife.’”
