Ogun State Hails Tinubu for Converting TASUED into a Federal University
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has explained the rationale behind the Federal Government’s takeover of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), emphasizing the need for a fair distribution of federal institutions across the state.
Speaking in Abeokuta, Abiodun highlighted that TASUED’s conversion into a federal university would not only balance educational opportunities but also attract more funding to enhance its academic excellence. He noted that Ogun East had been lacking a federal tertiary institution and saw TASUED as the ideal choice to bridge the gap.
“When I assumed office, I pledged fairness and equity. Given the distribution of federal institutions in the state, it became clear that Ogun East deserved a federal university. Instead of waiting for a new institution, we requested the takeover of TASUED, which has a strong academic foundation and legacy,” Abiodun stated.
He revealed that after careful deliberation, the state government presented the proposal to the Federal Government in July last year through the Minister of Education. Following due diligence, President Bola Tinubu approved the transition.
Abiodun assured that TASUED remains a premier institution, well-supported by his administration, and will now benefit further under federal ownership. “The Federal Government is inheriting a first-class university, and we are confident it will continue to thrive,” he added.
Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, also welcomed the development, noting that the takeover would provide more funding, improved infrastructure, and expanded research opportunities through TETFUND.
He urged TASUED to uphold its mandate as a center of excellence in education, ensuring it continues to shape policies and programs for national educational development.
