DJ Cuppy Reflects on Privileged Upbringing and Self-Realization

Nigerian disc jockey and billionaire heiress Florence Otedola, popularly known as DJ Cuppy, has shared how she only realized later in life that she grew up in privilege.

Cuppy, daughter of billionaire businessman Femi Otedola, explained that her childhood felt completely normal because she never had to worry about basic needs. It was only as she got older that she began to understand that what she took for granted was a luxury for many others.

Sharing her thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), she wrote: “Growing up, I didn’t fully realize just how privileged I was. I never had to worry about anything. Thank God I see it now. What felt normal to me is something someone else is praying for. Gratitude changes everything.”

Her post sparked discussions online, with many praising her self-awareness while others highlighted the struggles many face daily.

Cuppy is not the only Nigerian celebrity to have had this realization. Similarly, singer Davido once shared that he did not know his father was wealthy until he was 13. Despite being a billionaire, his father, Adedeji Adeleke, lived modestly, driving a Honda Accord and keeping a low profile. It was only when the family moved into a much larger home that Davido understood his family’s wealth.
