2027 Election Will Be Between Tinubu and Nigerians Not Just Political Parties Says PDP

As Nigeria looks ahead to the 2027 general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has made it clear that the vote will go beyond party competition. According to the party, it will be a major showdown between Nigerians and the current leadership under President Bola Tinubu.

The statement was made by PDP’s Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, during a ceremony in Abuja. He was presenting the Certificate of Return to Chief Ezenwafor Jude, the party’s candidate for the Anambra State governorship election. But his message was far bigger than the local race—it was about the future of Nigeria.

“This election in 2027 is not about how many governors or leaders a party has. It’s about Tinubu and Nigerians,” Damagum stated, directly linking the coming election to the challenges faced by everyday people across the country.

He described the situation in Nigeria as dire, saying that ordinary citizens are finding it harder each day just to survive. Damagum encouraged voters to take the 2027 election seriously and see it as a chance to change their situation by holding the government accountable.

“The ordinary man is feeling the pain, and the decision is his. This is APC versus Nigerians. It is not APC versus a governor or senator,” he added. “Let’s come together and rescue ourselves from this hardship that didn’t happen by chance—it was planned.”

Damagum’s remarks come amid internal challenges in the PDP, especially with the recent defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to the All Progressives Congress (APC), along with other key state officials.

Reacting to the defection, Damagum said he was deeply disappointed, especially considering the strong support PDP had given to Delta State over the years. “It’s very sad. If any state should be grateful to PDP, it’s Delta. The party has done everything for them—from the emergence of the governor to supporting the former governor, who was also our vice presidential candidate,” he said.

He admitted that although the decision may have been personal, it still hurts those who have remained loyal to the party. “We did not expect this from them. Still, this party has faced worse and is still standing strong,” he concluded.

What does this mean for Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections?
According to the PDP, the 2027 elections are not just about party loyalty or political figures—they are about the Nigerian people deciding whether they are satisfied with the current hardship or ready to make a change. The party believes Nigerians now have the power to shape the country’s direction.

Tips and Recommendations:

  • Nigerians should register early to vote and ensure their voter information is up-to-date.
  • Citizens should closely monitor political candidates and their performance before supporting them.
  • Avoid emotional voting; focus on leadership that delivers real results.
  • Political parties should listen to the people and not take loyalty for granted.

The PDP has made it clear—2027 is shaping up to be more than just a political event; it may be a turning point for Nigerians seeking real change.
