Burglars invade Niger State House of Assembly, cart away N30m
Niger State House of Assembly has been reportedly burgled by suspected robbers during which about N30m was stolen.
The exact day of the burglary could not be ascertained but the case came to light when a legislator was said to have gone to the Assembly last Saturday to deposit some money in the Strong room in the House, only to discover that the door of the strong room had already been forced open with unspecified amount of money carted away.
It was reliably gathered that part of the money stolen is meant for the upkeep of the House, while part of it belongs to some legislators.
It was also learnt that one of the legislators lost about N6m to the suspected robbers, money which is said to be part of his furniture and other upkeep allowance.
Similarly, the sum of N3m belonging to another legislator was said to be part of the money stolen.
The legislator who visited the Assembly to deposit some money in the safe immediately alerted the Police over the burglary and this led to the immediate arrest of some staff of the Assembly, mostly from the Accounts Department.
However, the State Police Command Spokesperson, ASP, Wasiu Abiodun, when contacted, confirmed the burglary but refused to give the exact amount stolen.
“We are still investigating as some arrests have been made and more arrests might still be effected”, the PPRO declared.
Similarly, security has been beefed up at the Assembly Complex as people moving in and out are subjected to thorough check.
